I think this country has come down with a vapid case of MRS (Magnetic Ribbon Syndrome). In my daily commute to work, every other car on the road is plastered with magnetic "ribbons". "Support our Troops" and "God Bless America", ad nauseum. I don't wish to offend, but just what the hell do we think those bits of magnet and rubber are going to accomplish? Will they bring the troops home from Iraq? Will they put an end to the bloodshed occurring on a daily basis in Iraq? Or are they simply a pacifier for an American public too dumb to realize they've been had?
Wake up people. Your magnetic ribbons won't solve a thing. Terrorism is not going to be the end of this country. Your mindless allegiance to the real perpetrators of terror, the Bush Administration, is what will bring this country to its knees. You want so desperately to have someone to hate and something to be afraid of, that you will listen to anyone who provides such targets. George Bush et al provided Saddam Hussein and Iraq as your new targets of hatred. Nevermind that there were no weapons of mass destruction to be found in Iraq. Nevermind that Saddam Hussein was not responsible for the events of September 11th. And nevermind that the United States budget is now drowning in red ink, thanks to the cowboy mentality of this administration. Let's only think about putting another ribbon on our gas guzzling SUV's and driving down the road to a ruined economy and a devastated social system. Let's remember that marriage is only between a man and a woman and hate any relationship that does not conform to that religious ideal. Hatred, selfishness, bigotry and misogyny.... those are the real accomplishments of the Bush Administration. Oh and let's not forget death. Lots and lots of deaths. But hey, as long as it's happening to someone else, why worry? Proud to be an American? Not anymore.
Last week, a good friend and colleague was the victim of a "road rage" attack that sent him to the hospital (I know - I drove him there myself). This week, a person of dubious intelligence decided that he should lay on his horn because I wasn't going to make a left turn on a red light (to beat the oncoming traffic).
WTF? All I can say is that these people are the worst representation of America and unfortunately, this is the representation that the world has come to accept as uniquely American. It's the same "cowboy, me-first and to hell with what anyone else thinks" mentality that is being handed down from the highest level of government (e.g., the White House) to its citizens. Wouldn't surprise me if these are the same people who show up in their houses of worship and profess to "love the lord". If that behavior is what their lord wants, I want no part of their "lord" and I want my government to keep their "lord" away from its doors.
